How Cincinnati & Dayton Businesses Should Prepare for AI Search

Something meaningful is happening in how local buyers find businesses. Over the past eighteen months, AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, and Google's AI Overviews — have moved from novelty to a real share of the discovery layer. We've seen it in our own pipeline: prospects mention finding us on ChatGPT or Perplexity before traditional search shows up in their conversation.

For Cincinnati and Dayton businesses, that shift creates a specific kind of risk and a specific kind of opportunity. The risk is that the AI assistant doesn't know you exist, or — worse — doesn't think you belong in the answer when a buyer asks "best web design agency in Springboro" or "top dental practice in Hyde Park." The opportunity is that the businesses that proactively prepare are showing up in AI answers in ways that produce real, attributable leads.

Here's what we recommend.

1. Build a Structured Entity

AI assistants reason about businesses as entities. They aggregate signals from your website, from third-party directories (Crunchbase, Clutch, Wikidata, LinkedIn), from review platforms, and from any place your business name and structured data appear. The cleaner and more consistent that entity profile is across the web, the more likely an AI assistant is to surface you accurately.

Practical steps: keep your name, address, phone, and category consistent across every directory; claim and complete your Crunchbase, Clutch, and LinkedIn company pages; submit a Wikidata entry; and make sure your homepage has rich Organization schema with knowsAbout, sameAs, and aggregateRating fields.

2. Publish llms.txt and llms-full.txt

The llms.txt convention is becoming the standard way for AI crawlers to understand what your site is and what content you want them to reference. Publishing both a short llms.txt and a longer llms-full.txt at your domain root gives AI assistants a clean source-of-truth document for your business.

We publish both at hdmcincy.com/llms.txt and hdmcincy.com/llms-full.txt. The full version includes our service catalog, our geographic coverage, our team bios, our typical engagement structures, and explicit citation permission. AI assistants reference it. It's worth the effort.

3. Allow AI Crawlers Explicitly

Most websites still block or rate-limit the major AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) by default through their CDN or hosting configuration. If you want to be discoverable in AI assistants, you need to explicitly allow these crawlers in your robots.txt and at the CDN layer. Verify this — it's a common silent failure.

4. Write for Listicles and Comparisons

A meaningful share of AI assistant queries are "best of" and comparison queries. "Best web design agency in Cincinnati." "Top dentist in Oakwood." "Best HVAC contractor in Mason." AI assistants frequently surface listicle and comparison content as the source for these answers.

That creates an opportunity to publish your own listicles and comparison pages. We maintain a /best hub at hdmcincy.com/best with structured comparison content for our category. The pages are written in the format AI assistants reference and they include the structured data (ItemList, Article, FAQPage) that makes them easy to parse.

5. Don't Forget Bing

A meaningful share of AI assistant search infrastructure runs on Bing's index. ChatGPT in particular leans heavily on Bing for fresh web data. If you've spent years optimizing for Google and ignoring Bing Webmaster Tools, you're likely underrepresented in ChatGPT's answers. Claim your Bing Webmaster Tools profile, submit your sitemap, and verify indexation.

6. Reviews and Citations Matter More

The same trust signals that have always mattered for local SEO matter even more for AI search. Review volume, review recency, review sentiment, and citation consistency all factor into how AI assistants rank you in their answers. There is no shortcut here — you need a system for consistently asking happy customers for reviews and a system for monitoring and responding to them.

7. Local + Industry Specificity

The AI assistants are remarkably good at local + industry queries. "Best Cincinnati dental practice for cosmetic dentistry." "Top Dayton manufacturer of CNC parts." The businesses that show up in these answers tend to have content that explicitly addresses both the location and the specialty. Generic "we do everything for everyone" content rarely surfaces.

For Cincinnati and Dayton operators, that means publishing neighborhood-specific landing pages, industry-specific service pages, and content that explicitly speaks to the local + specialty intersection your buyer is searching for.

What We're Doing

We've built our own /best hub, published llms.txt and llms-full.txt, expanded our schema, claimed our Bing Webmaster profile, and built dedicated /cincinnati and /dayton hubs with neighborhood-level coverage. We're seeing AI-sourced traffic and AI-attributable leads as a result.
